Cost Savings for Small Businesses Year End Technology Opportunities

There is no doubt that 2020 is a year like no other and so is the impact to small businesses, both rooted in the COVID-19 pandemic. A study by CBIZ Main Street found that 84% of businesses surveyed realized some impact from the pandemic and corresponding economic slowdown. Notably, smaller businesses, those with 1-4 employees, were most severely affected by the pandemic.

As the year winds down many business owners seize upon a shift in demand, when retailers are pushing out old inventory in anticipation of the latest and greatest technology. If retailers are expecting fresh technology, then you will usually find that they begin discounting their current stock to make way for the new. Different manufacturers will operate on different cycles. However, new products release in the spring, mid-year for the back-to-school period, and in September as the holiday season approaches.

Manufacturers like Dell, HP, and Acer often release their new products on certain timelines. Roark Tech Services keeps up with these timelines and constantly monitor tech news, so you remain knowledgeable.

Small businesses do not necessarily need “bleeding edge” or even “cutting edge.” Battle-tested, proven solutions often work best for small businesses. Q4 is a perfect time to consider what deals are available for your business.

Year-end is also an appropriate time to examine your subscriptions and determine if a change is warranted, desired or necessary. For example, many years ago DropBox was to go-to standard for cloud storage. With many businesses moving to Microsoft365 in 2020, which includes OneDrive, does a small business need both? Apple recently announced Apple One, which bundles iCloud storage, Apple News, Apple Music and AppleTV. If you subscribe to Apple One it may overlap with legacy solutions and permit cost savings with selection of best-of-breed.

Finally, Q4 is an ideal time to examine product warranties and determine what is expiring, what is worth renewing and what is covered by warranty.

While much of this can seem overwhelming and often confusing, everyone at Roark Tech Services remains up-to-date and poised to answer any questions you have. If you are considering making upgrading your technology before December 31, contact us and we will help you make the best choice for your unique business.
